Black-Eyed Susan Nominees:
If you need some fresh books for your summer reading, consider getting a jump start on the new 2010-2011 Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Nominees. The truly special thing about the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is that while a committee of school and public librarians selects the nominees, the award winners are determined based entirely on student voting. The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award was begun in 1992 as a Maryland Children's Choice award to be given to outstanding authors/illustrators. Ten books are nominated in each of the four categories: Picture Books, Grades 4-6, Grades 6-9, and High School.

In order to qualify to vote in April, you must read a minimum of three of the titles in one category. 6th graders may select either the Grades 4-6 category or the Grades 6-9 category -- or both. Students in 7th and 8th grade can vote for their favorite of the titles in the Grades 6-9 category.

We'll be starting a book blog entirely devoted to reviews of the Black-Eyed Susan Nominees when we return from summer vacation. In the meantime, READ!!
